Earwig infestation became a common sight in the us after 1900s.
Although, they are not particularly harmful to your garden or home, they are certainly not a welcome addition to your yard.
Earwigs can be difficult to spot during a day because they rarely get out of their hiding place.
There are several ways of and most of them are very easy to implement.
Given below are some simple techniques of controlling and garden.
Paper traps earwigs love cool, moist, shady areas.
They feed at night and hide during the day.
Hence, making and laying them around in the garden can help trapping earwigs.
Crumple a newspaper and soak it in water.
Roll the newspaper in the hose and place the pieces all over the garden, in shady areas.
The moisture in the newspaper will attract the earwigs and make them crawl right in the newspaper roll.
In the morning, you will find several insects trapped in the hose pieces.
Now carefully place each piece in a large plastic bag and seal it and throw away in trash.
Tin traps find several tuna cans and remove the sharp metal burr from the cans.
Halffill the cans with water and put a slice of apple in each can.
Now place these cans at strategic locations in the garden such as flower beds, vegetable patches etc.
The smell of apple attracts the earwigs towards the cans.
By the morning, most of them will have drowned themselves in the water.
You may also try placing lids half filled with vegetable oil and a slice of orange in each of them.
Food baits take a cottage cheese container and cover its bottom with half inch layer of soy sauce.
Now, very carefully pour vegetable oil on it to form a thin film over the soy sauce layer.
Lay these containers loosely in the garden to attract earwigs.
You may also try placing boric acid baits in cardboard boxes.
Punch holes in cardboard box and keep some oatmeal or bran spiked with boric acid powder.
Earwigs will eat the bait and die.
You may have to repeat the exercise for a week until the infestation clears out completely.
Natural method of controlling earwigs includes introducing the predators of earwigs in your garden.
Toads and lizards love to eat earwigs.
Hence, do not drive the toads out until you have cleared the earwig infestation.
In us, a parasitic fly named digonichaeta setipennis can effectively clear the earwig infestation.
This fly is akin to housefly except it is a bit larger.
These flies have cleared over one third of earwig population in the past few years.
You can attract these flies by planting plants such as anise, buckwheat, coreopsis, cosmos, dill, fennel, golden marguerite, painted daisy, tansy etc.
You should regularly clean your garden or yard, so as to prevent any infestation.
Accumulated debris of dried flowers, leaves etc.
Should be removed from the garden.
In short, do not provide ready made hiding places for earwig infestation.
One must understand that earwigs also do a lot of good to your garden, hence may not be always a good idea.
They eat insect larvae, eggs and scavenge decaying matter.
Hence, think about controlling earwigs only if the infestation becomes a nuisance to your garden.
