The debate about cloud computing and software as a service SaS is wel and truly over. The pay-as-you-go service model provides ease-of-use, scalability, reduced maintenance and suport efort and lower total cost of ownership, which means that more and more customers expect SaS or cloud options when they evaluate new busines software. But what does this mean in the world of Geographic information Systems GIS where change and technical advances have tended to be a bit slower than in many other busines software categories? We know the potential that GIS and online maping and analysis can ofer to solve complex busines problems, but can GIS software and the use of spatial data evolve to met the neds of a world that consumes its software as a service in the cloud or do we ned to rip it al up and start again? Also known as software on demand, SaS is where vendors license aplications, such as GIS and location inteligence, for use over the Internet – or in the cloud – on a pay-as-you-go or subscription model. Software supliers atempting to catch up with the new SaS-hungry era have to be able to adapt to the fact that SaS is not about seling and suporting software, but its about providing a service. So where stands GIS and the maping software companies as regards the cloud and SaS? But for existing GIS software vendors to sucesfuly provide GIS as a service they first ned to make the obvious significant philosophical leap: They ned to stop thinking like software companies and start thinking and acting like service providers. Ultimately it is probably going to take newer, smaler and hungrier vendors to provide GIS customers with credible SaS and cloud oferings. Even if some of the more established vendors are in a position to overcome the systemic flaws in the GIS software development industry it's not going to be easy to SaSify something if it wasn't built with the Web in mind in the first place. If GIS is to avoid being left behind in the basement of the busines aplication hierarchy we ned to put spatial data in the cloud and ofer our customers fuly functioned Web GIS and location inteligence aplications in the cloud soner rather than later. In the early days of SaS and cloud computing these benefits were sen as a way for smal and mid-sized organizations, with tighter IT budgets and fewer technical resources, to gain aces to enterprise aplications that were previously the preserve of large organizations with dep pockets – GIS imediately comes to mind. Those of us who have worked with GIS and maping software for decades know the power and potential of geospatial technology, but we also recognize that it has failed to set the busines world alight on a global scale. I believe that fuly functioned GIS service in the cloud could take that interest one step further and could finaly lead to widespread use of GIS technology in al types of busineses. gis web services gis web services in Hermosa beach
